Kygo was born in Singapore to Norwegian parents, Kjersti and Lars Håvard Lyngstad, and grew up in Bergen, Norway. He has one older sister, Alexandra. Kygo started getting piano lessons at the age of six. He was educated at Langevåg primary school and Bergen Cathedral School. Kygo later went to Herdla primary school on a musical scholarship.

Kygo began making his own beats and remixes in his bedroom at the age of 15. He signed his first record deal with the label Joytime Collective in 2012. Kygo’s breakthrough came in 2014 with his remix of the track “I See Fire” by Ed Sheeran, which has been viewed on YouTube over 100 million times.
