Josh Duhamel was born Joshua David Duhamel on November 14, 1972, in Minot, North Dakota. He was the son of Bonnie L. Hodulik and Larry Duhamel, an advertising salesman. Duhamel was raised in a small town with his two older sisters, Ashlee and Kassidy. His performance in the theater workshop earned him a partial scholarship to Minot State University, where he studied acting.

In 1997, Duhamel made his acting debut on the soap opera All My Children. He played the role of Leo du Pres from 1999 to 2002. During this time, he starred in multiple made-for-television films and left the world of soap operas in 2003. In 2004, he had his first major role in the romantic comedy Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!
