    Early life

    Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas. He was the eldest of four children born to Lawrence Odell Holly and Ella Pauline Drake. His parents were both of English descent.

    Holly was raised in the Holley family home in Lubbock. He began playing guitar at age 13 and soon started performing with local bands. In 1955, he made his first recordings for the Decca label.

    Career

    In 1957, Holly and his band, the Crickets, released “That’ll Be the Day” and “Oh, Boy!,” which were both major hits. Holly wrote or co-wrote most of the songs he recorded, and he also played lead guitar on many of them. He quickly became one of the most popular rock and roll performers of the 1950s.

    Death

    On February 3, 1959, Holly, along with J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and Richie Valens, was killed in a plane crash in Iowa. The accident, which came to be known as “the day the music died,” shocked the world and ended the careers of three of rock and roll’s most promising young stars. Holly was only 22 years old at the time of his death.

    Legacy

    In 1986, Holly was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
