    Early life

    Muhammad Ali was born on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was named after his father, Cassius Marcellus Clay Sr., who was a heavy-weight boxer. His mother’s name was Odessa O’Grady Clay. He had four brothers and sisters.

    Career

    At the age of 12, Ali’s bicycle was stolen, and he was so angry that he wanted to beat up the thief. A police officer named Joe Martin told him that he could learn to box at his gym.

    Ali started boxing when he was only 12 years old. He won his first bout by split decision. He then went on to win the Golden Gloves tournament in 1959 and 1960.

    In 1960, Ali won the Olympic gold medal in the light heavyweight division.

    Retirement and later life

    Ali retired from boxing in 1981. He then focused on his philanthropic work. He founded the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

    In 1996, Ali lit the Olympic flame at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

    Legacy

    Ali was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. In 2005, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
