    Bryce Dallas Howard was born on March 2, 1981, in Los Angeles, California. She is the eldest daughter of actor and director Ron Howard and producer Cheryl Howard (née Alley). Howard has two younger sisters, twins Jocelyn and Paige, and a younger brother, Reed. Her paternal grandparents were actor Rance Howard and actress Jean Speegle Howard. Her uncle is actor Clint Howard, and her great-uncle is actor and director Ron Howard.

    Howard was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. She attended Greenwich Country Day School before enrolling in Stagedoor Manor performing arts camp. She graduated from Byram Hills High School in Armonk, New York, in 1999. She then attended the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City.
