    Alicia Augello Cook was born on January 25, 1981, in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, to Teresa Augello, an Irish-Italian paralegal and part-time actress, and Craig Cook, an African-American flight attendant. She was given the name “Alicia” by her mother after the poem “The Fairie Queene” by Edmund Spenser. Raised by her mother in Manhattan, she graduated from the Professional Performing Arts School at the age of 16.
